A working mother who is always busy with her work
wants to make her own device safe for her child to use
when her child uses the parent device out of their sight.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

PAPER WIREFRAME

I transfer my idea from sticky note to paper to work on more details. When I was working on the user flow of this design I found that our users might need a few changes on the current exiting design. So I made changes to the existing design to support this design.

HIGH FIDELITY WIREFRAMES

I have followed Google material design guidelines. I have also followed the current design style guideline to match my new design with that. Tried to make it clean and user-friendly.

Turn off Supervision from the notification panel

Now users can turn off supervision on their device from the notification panel. It will reduce user clicks (taps) and make turning off supervision easy.

Supervision Toggle on Activity monitoring page

I add a supervision toggle also on the activity monitoring page to give users their freedom. I didn't want users to walk on my created flow but their own created flow.

User vs Design Consistency

Should I use their Google Account image and name on the cover to keep consistent with the design? If I use their account image and name, they can feel they are controlling themselves, when they will look at the cover. After thinking for a while I have decided to use the image from their google account but change the name to "This Device".

Supervision turn on/off toggle

Parents told me that their children use their devices 2-5 times a day. To make it easy to switch between their using mode and children's using mode I add a toggle on the home screen.

Password protected

Children who use their parents' phones 2-5 times a day are more likely to know the password of their parents' devices. To make supervision secure parents can add a password.

Why did I choose to give freedom to users to choose password type?

There might be some parents who don’t want a password. Also, there might be a group of parents who will not feel comfortable using google passwords 2 to 5 times a day. So I let the user decide that. Users can use a new password only to turn off supervision on this device.

< Previous Design

With the Previous design, parents only can manage kids' access to the devices within the ecosystem.

Make your own device safe for your children

Now busy parents can make their devices safe for their children to use, not just devices in the ecosystem. I have added the “This Device” option. So now the parents can choose whether they want to supervise devices within the ecosystem or without the ecosystem.

Observing Children

This product's user is Parents. But before empathizing with users, I observed their children using digital devices. My goal for this observation was to understand parents and the reason behind their thoughts. How a child uses a digital device, what services do they use, what are their purposes to use a digital device, and observing them using a digital device.

Empathize

#1
Children repeat orally when listening to something.

#2
Children aren't allowed to have their personal devices.

#3
Children spend money on games.

USER PERSONA

To understand my focused group users and their problem I create a persona. Defining the user can help to understand their problem as well I understand their situation and what are they experiencing.

PROJECT PROCESS

Analysis & Synthesis

I used Affinity Diagrams and Empathy Maps to understand the data I collect from user interviews and observations and tried to understand our focused user group's problems.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Google Family Link App is an existing app in the market that allows parents to manage their kid's access to the devices within the Google ecosystem.
I have isolated several blind spots. So I wanted to approach this as a personal project and tried to find problems of that ignored user group. My discovery led me to a few pain points but I had priorities based on user value and feasibility ratio and solved the solvable problems. I focused on designing an experience where parents can make their own devices safe for their children to use, not just the devices in the ecosystem.

PROJECT CHALLENGE

Find new problems or ignored problems that currently parents are facing.

STORYBOARD

Tried to put when and how our users will use this product in a scenario and tried to see them using the product in real life so that I can explore new unseen thoughts and experiences.

User Research

I have conducted user interviews with parents who have 5-13 years aged children. Both working parents and housemaker parents were part of my user interview. Each interview had taken 15-20 minutes. I have learned about their children's activities with digital devices. How do their children use digital devices on normal days, on holidays, and during COVID-19? They have shared stories and experiences with their children.

Setting Goals

After analysis and synthesis, I had found more than 1 user problem and I have prioritized those problems. Cause I can’t solve all problems together that's why I have chosen the P1 problem to solve.

#P0
Users want to just filter inappropriate content on their devices rather than stop using the service (App).

#P1
Parents can't monitor their own device while their child using it away from their eyesight.

Why did I choose to solve the P1 problem instead of P0?
